This blog is presented by the staff of V.K. Vandaveer, P.L.L.C. We are a Washington, D.C. law firm dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and professionals and their families achieve their immigration and business goals.

Having lived and worked abroad, our staff understands the unique aspects of international practice and living and working in a foreign country. We use our experience to successfully guide our clients through the variety of business, legal, and cultural issues that typify cross-border transactions.

Attorney

Vonda K. Vandaveer is admitted to practice law in California and Washington, DC. She has lived and worked in the United States, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Balkans representing clients in their international business transactions, U.S. government contracting efforts, and immigration matters. She has worked in both the private and government sectors.

She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), American Bar Association, has served as Vice-Chair of the ABA’s Humanitarian Law Committee of the Section of International Law, and is published in the ABA’s publications Middle East Commercial Law Developments and International Lawyer.

She also has received professional training in consular processing at the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service Institute and has performed consular services for a U.S. embassy overseas.

Prior to earning her law degree and license, Ms. Vandaveer worked for 10 years as a journalist on the east and west coasts of the U.S., winning awards for her news coverage.

Ms. Vandaveer earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Irvine and her law degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA.

Attorney

Rachel Hersh is admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is a member of the American Bar Association and the Virginia Bar Association.

She earned her law degree from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C.  She received her bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, where she was a James Monroe Scholar.

Ms. Hersh has a background in international law and international relations.  She has lived and studied in Krakow, Poland and Rome, Italy.  While in Krakow, she took part in the Jagellonian University’s International Business and Trade Law Program as a recipient of the Kosciuszko Foundation Scholarship for Academic Excellence.  While in Rome, she spent her time mastering the Italian language and studying Italian history, art and architecture.   

In her spare time, Ms. Hersh works as a pro bono attorney for the Borromeo Legal Project in Arlington, VA.  There, she provides assistance to members of the community who have unmet legal needs in matters related to U.S. immigration, such as naturalization and deportation.

Legal Services Manager

Assya Thode has extensive international experience, having worked in consular services for U.S. embassies in Paraguay and Mexico. She also received professional training in consular processing at the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service Institute.

Ms. Thode grew up in Algeria and studied fashion design at the institute there before coming to the United States. She speaks English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
